Become a Person Who Works Out in the Morning

  1. Eat Right the Night Before – That heavy carb snack you had right before bed tasted pretty good then, but by morning, you’re feeling groggy and heavy. Your stomach needs time to digest the food and eating right before bed makes that difficult. No, you don’t have to stop eating at 7 pm, but it is wise to cease eating 90 minutes before your head hits the pillow. However, if you must partake in a little nighttime grazing, make it a point to eat lean proteins, veggies, and healthy fats. This will ensure that you wake up feeling good and well rested.
  2. Coax Yourself to Bed Earlier – Although it might sound like a broken record, it is really true that going to bed earlier makes it easier to get up the next morning. Your body’s internal circadian rhythm needs about 7 to 8 hours of quality rest. Limit your cell phone, computer, and TV time at least 2 hours before bedtime. If you must use your phone or tablet to read a book, make sure that the device is set to nighttime mode. This will limit the amount of blue light and increase warm light, making it easier to sleep.
  3. Find Something to Look Forward To – No one wakes up and says, “yes! I can’t wait to mindlessly run on the treadmill!” For that reason, that’s why it’s so hard to actually get up and do it. There’s plenty of reasons to get out of bed in the morning, however, there’s not as many to be excited about. Excitement is what drives many people and it can be the thing that makes you look forward to waking up. Self-motivation is intrinsic and the body is highly adaptable once it acclimates to a schedule. Sign up for a workout class, running group, or yoga class.
  4. Have an AM Workout Buddy – Teamwork makes the dream work! Having someone besides yourself to hold you accountable for making those AM workouts makes it so much easier. No one likes to bail on people, so you’re more likely to make it to the gym or that yoga class than if you were to do it on your own. With summer here, you are definitely likely to find a friend to workout with you. Hey, you might even make a new friend along the way.
  5. Set Up Your Morning Ahead of Time – If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Preparation is the foundation for success and the key to actually working out in the morning. The less you have to think about, the more likely you are to get up and go. Lay out your clothes the night before, prepare your smoothie, fill up your water bottle, and make sure your playlist is set and ready. Once morning arrives, you’ll be ready to rock ‘n’ roll into the body you deserve.
